Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens better known by her stage name Queen Latifah is an American rapper actress and singer. In film, music and television Queen Latifah is the recipient of two Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award as well as six more Grammy nominations, and nods to the Emmy Award. Queen Latifah is a Newark New Jersey native. Her parents are Lancelot Sr. as a police officer as well as Rita, a teacher of Irvington High School. Her father and mother separated when Latifah turned ten. Latifah went to Catholic school in Newark the state of New Jersey. She was also raised in the Baptist Church. Latifah refers to an Arabic word that means "delicate and kind". The cousin she had granted it to her at the age of eight. Being a tall girl, her height of 5'10 inches Latifah was a power forward on the basketball team at her high school. She sang the song home from the musical The Wiz in a high school production. Latifah was a member of the Ladies Fresh, a rap collective that started her beatboxing career. Latifah was one of the members of the original model of the Flavor Unit which at that the time was comprised of MCs who were grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King, made a recording of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. He handed the recording over to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was interested by the song. It was signed by Latifah and then released her first single Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
